2025 Disaster Recovery Support

From January 2025, North and Far North Queensland communities have been impacted by severe flooding and heavy rainfall. In response, various government agencies have rolled out financial and practical assistance programs to help residents, businesses, and communities recover.

Grants available for Businesses & Primary Producers

Businesses affected by the North and Far North Tropical Low may be eligible for disaster assistance loans up to $250,000 and essential working capital loans up to $100,000. Both the Queensland and Australian Governments provide financial help to businesses affected by natural disasters.

Queensland Government Disaster Recovery Support:

Eligible residents in the hardest-hit areas can apply for financial assistance to help with immediate needs. Support is currently available for those in the following Local Government Areas (LGA):

  • Cairns LGA– defined localities
  • Townsville LGA– defined localities
  • Burdekin LGA– defined localities
  • Cassowary Coast LGA– defined localities
  • Hinchinbrook LGA– entire region
  • Palm Island LGA– entire region

Employee disaster support

Under the Fair Work Act, employers can stand down employees without pay if severe weather or natural disasters, like floods or bushfires, stop them from working. However, employees may be entitled to pay if their award, agreement, or contract includes stand-down provisions.

Emotional & Community Support

If you’re experiencing emotional distress due to the floods, confidential counselling and support services are available 24/7 via the Community Recovery Lifeline Hotline at 1800 116 671.
